Is Crypto Legal in Bolivia?

Cryptocurrency is now legal for trading in Bolivia following a historic policy reversal in June 2024, though it is not recognized as legal tender. The Central Bank of Bolivia officially lifted the ban on cryptocurrencies through Board Resolution No. 082/2024, which reaffirmed the validity of virtual assets including cryptocurrencies and other digital assets (1). The shift in policy has led to explosive growth in cryptocurrency adoption across Bolivia. Citizens increasingly turned to virtual assets after the ban was lifted, with transactions involving cryptocurrencies amounting to $294 million in the first half of 2025 compared with $46.5 million over the first six months of 2024, representing year-on-year growth of approximately 532% (2). Despite this surge, cryptocurrencies are not mandatory to accept as payment, and companies cannot use them as currencies or securities within their accounting systems.
