Cryptocurrency is now legal for trading in Bolivia following a historic policy reversal in June 2024, though it is not recognized as legal tender. The Central Bank of Bolivia officially lifted the ban on cryptocurrencies through Board Resolution No. 082/2024, which reaffirmed the validity of virtual assets including cryptocurrencies and other digital assets (1). This new legislation paves the way for technological and financial innovation in the country, allowing entrepreneurs, investors and individuals to access the evolving digital assets market while maintaining strict regulatory oversight.
The shift in policy has led to explosive growth in cryptocurrency adoption across Bolivia. Citizens increasingly turned to virtual assets after the ban was lifted, with transactions involving cryptocurrencies amounting to $294 million in the first half of 2025 compared with $46.5 million over the first six months of 2024, representing year-on-year growth of approximately 532% (2). Despite this surge, cryptocurrencies are not mandatory to accept as payment, and companies cannot use them as currencies or securities within their accounting systems.
"Despite the fact that cryptocurrencies can now be traded, they are not considered as legal tender in Bolivia, reason why it is not mandatory to accept them as a means of payment."
Bolivia's regulatory framework remains restrictive despite the lifted ban, with cryptocurrency trading allowed only through licensed platforms and strict enforcement of anti-money laundering regulations. The Central Bank and Financial System Supervisory Authority oversee cryptocurrency rules and compliance, requiring Virtual Asset Service Providers to register with financial authorities (1). Bolivia had been isolated from global crypto trends since implementing a strict ban in 2014, but now aims to become a strategic player ready to benefit from the transforming potential of digital assets through clear regulation for safe and responsible adoption.
